Dr Rafat Jan, Associate Professor, School of Nursing and Midwifery, receives her award from Dr Gail Stuart, Dean, College of Nursing, Medical University of South Carolina March 12, 2016

Dr Rafat Jan has received the Distinguished Alumna of the Year 2016 award from the MUSC College of Nursing Alumni Association, where she studied 20 years ago.

While bestowing the award, MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) lauded Dr Jan’s “tireless dedication and service to midwifery and advocating better care for pregnant women and babies in and around the Pakistan region” and noted that this was “an outstanding example of the global impact of the nursing profession.”
On hearing of the award Dr Jan said: “I am deeply happy – and surprised – that even though I spent less than two years at MUSC 20 years ago, they tracked my profile and found me eligible for the award. This award is evidence of how of a strong work ethic and a commitment to life-long learning can reap rewards. I’d encourage all nurses and midwives  to always ask how they can improve as that is key to making nurses into local and global leaders.”

The accolade is another feather in the cap of the distinguished nurse. Not long ago she was director of the nascent midwifery programme at AKU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, and has subsequently been elected as president of the Pakistan Nursing Council – the first time a nurse-midwife has held the position.

After obtaining her bachelor’s at AKU, Dr Jan completed her master’s in nursing from MUSC and topped it off with a PhD in nursing informatics from the University of Iowa.
