Vice Provost

​Dr Kweku K Bentil was appointed Vice Provost in July 2013. 

Kweku is based in Nairobi but has unive​rsity-wide responsibilities across all AKU campuses for quality assurance, academic programs, and faculty relations and development.  In addition, he is responsible for administrative oversight of academic budgeting, pre-university enrichment programs, continuing and professional education, academic partnerships, and community engagement.

Dr Bentil completed his undergraduate studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He attended graduate school at the University of Florida (in Gainesville) where he earned his Master of Science degree followed by his PhD degree in Civil Engineering.  Kweku served in the private sector/industry for 10 years prior to beginning his academic career at the University of Florida, in 1985.  He earned tenure, as an associate professor, at the University of Florida in 1989.  He has been a full professor since 1996 and has previously served in several senior-level academic administrative and leadership positions.

Vice Provost

​Dr Mary J Sansalone was appointed Vice Provost and Founding Dean, Faculty of Arts & Sciences, in September 2013.  

In her role as Vice Provost, Mary serves as the senior academic representative of the Provost in Pakistan, overseeing the operations of the Office of the Provost there, leads the University’s collaboration with the Aga Khan Education Services, and oversees the operations of the AKU Examination Board. 

As Founding Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS), Mary is the chief academic and administrative officer for all academic programs within the faculty on all AKU campuses and has responsibility for overseeing the development of the FAS in both Arusha, Tanzania, and Karachi, Pakistan.

Mary Sansalone studied literature and engineering as an undergraduate.   She received her MS and PhD in engineering from Cornell University (1984, 1986) and an MPA from the Kennedy School at Harvard University (1999).  She joined the faculty of engineering at Cornell University in 1987, where she spent nearly twenty years on the faculty, before becoming Dean of Engineering and Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis in 2006.  In 2010 she became Provost and later Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women, a start-up liberal arts college in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
